I am knee-deep in the second round of games tonight, and have yet to wear down GP enough so that he will agree to play Scrabble with me. So, given that much of my brain is occupied with shooting stats and possession arrows, I ask you Facebook users out there (which I am assuming is just about everyone, right?): what do we think of the "people you might know" feature? Too weird, or totally brilliant?
(I am enjoying it because I once deactivated my account and had to create a whole new one because my .edu address forwarding hadn't been activated yet, and so I had to start my friend list from scratch. I'm still working on the rebuilding-- too many sorority chicks, seriously.)
Ok, off to pray that CBS will realize that I want to watch Michigan State/Memphis way more than I want to watch Kansas/Villanova.
ETA (after all the games are over): ugh, SO not worth it! This is the Sweet Sixteen, y'all! And I lost Scrabble, thanks to prefixes and suffixes. Boo.

Friday fill-ins, part deux
Because on a Friday morning, little is motivating me to do work. That, and I brought my personal laptop to work, and it is sitting on my desk right next to the work one, begging me to play instead of make one more freaking spreadsheet. May I present to you...
1. Some relationships are meant to end badly. This is how one learns
2. Matt Nathanson/Ingrid Michaelson at the Fillmore in SF is the last concert I saw; it was completely awesome! I wish I were able to see more live music (yes, I realize this has little to do with actual ability, and more to do with priorities and motivation, but...I have no defense against that).
3. Spring should be warmer, no? The weather people are saying rain, and I am saying, "NO! This is California! This is why I pay so much to live here, right?"
4. Oh no! I forgot to send my friend with a birthday this week her birthday card! (I am sending as many birthday card as possible this year-- it's sort of a New Year's resolution, but I am afraid that officially calling it that will jinx things. Hopefully the aforementioned friend will accept an apology and belated card.)
5. I've recently started using Google Calendar. I think it's pure genius-- anyone with me?
6. LOLcats never fail to make me smile. What am I, made of stone?
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to watching some college basketball, tomorrow my plans include a barbecue at The Apartment with my Dad (and yet more basketball) and Sunday, I want to have brunch with the family to celebrate my brother's 21st birthday. (I will actually be going to this brunch-- mostly because I have no intention of going to a bar with a group of his other-21-year-old-dude friends.)
I half-promise there will be real content later today, all concocted by my very own brain. Only half, though, because I am almost too crazy excited not to be sick anymore.

2 quick things!
Thing #1: I got a call from my uncle yesterday evening, and the biopsy that was done on Mark's lung has come back benign. They are still going to re-biopsy and treat it, even if only with laproscopic surgery, but right now I am cautiously optimistic. Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts.
Thing #2: This woman was in my office about fifteen minutes ago, teary-eyed and telling me a story about how she is from Bakersfield and works cleaning houses, but got fired from that job, and her boyfriend beats her up (this woman had bruises and lacerations on her arms and face, so there was little doubt as to her veracity), and she's three months pregnant and diabetic, and can I please help her pay for one more night in the motel where she's staying until her sister comes to pick her up? I know that's a long sentence, but it was a long story, and she was near-crying the whole time. Folks, if you want me to empty my wallet for you, you need to, a) be a victim of domestic violence, b) be pregnant and trying to escape the aforementioned situation, and c) nearly crying. My will is weak, and my wallet is usually light on cash, but I will do everything short of driving you back to Bakersfield (that's where I draw the line-- Bakersfield sucks) to help you out. "Megan, you're an idiot. She was clearly lying," you might say. Well, let's look at this from both sides, then. If she was lying, I gave her $18 for her and/or her abusive boyfriend's drug/alcohol habit, which will continue to destroy at least a few lives. If she was telling the truth, then I helped out at least two people today, and for less than $20. If there is change either way, I would like to think that I either helped shift it toward the positive in a big way, or didn't do too much harm to an already terrible situation.
What do you think? Am I a sucker?

Thousands of words, condensed
Yes, because I am in a fog of multiple cold (is that what we would call this?) medicines, I am jumping onto this seen-on-many-other-blogs craze...
Here’s how it works:
1. Go to www.photobucket.com
2. Type in your answer to the question in the “search” box
3. Use only the first page
4. Insert the picture into your Blog
1.) What is your Relationship Status?

2.) Who is your Celebrity Crush?

3.) Who is your Favorite Band / Artist?

4.) What is your Favorite Movie?

5.) What kind of pet do you have?

6.) Where do you live?

7.) Where do you work?

8.) What do you look like?

Well...this is what you get when you search for "pale and blonde." I cannot tell a lie-- I don't look this much like Barbie.
9.) What do you drive?

11.) What is your Favorite TV Show?

12.) Describe yourself:

NB: this is what you get when you say, "I like to read." I'm pretty sure this kid can't read.
14.) What is your Name?

15.) What’s your Favorite Candy?

Yes, friends, I know there are numbers missing. Anyone care to help a lady out?

Phlegm
Sorry, the title isn't meant to gross anyone out, just to provide an accurate, one-word picture of my health at the moment. (Also, I was floored when, at the age of ten or so, I found out there was a "g" in it. That blew my mind.) Today, Internets, I am home sick from work. While this seems novel when one is fighting to keep one's head off the desk due to congestion that is truly head-pounding, it is decidedly less exciting during a week that is a compression of the time I usually have to do my job (that is, one week of recruiting rather than the usual two), as well as the second of two weeks of the Great Springtime GPparent Visit of Aught-Eight. Just...not enough time to entertain, be competent at work, and manage to breathe through one's nose.
The silver lining of this otherwise-lame day is that it's GP's (last! ever!) spring break, and he is working from home today. He is also willing to bring me most things I ask for, which includes a delicious and oh-so-healthy dinner of...Taco Bell. Sure to cure whatever ails me, right? Or at least be spicy enough (after a healthy dose of the Tapatio) to alert my body that hey! Food tastes like things! Remember that?
Excuse me, friends, while I go cough like a 74-year-old with emphysema* and make awful faces while taking more and more 'tussin.
* emphysema is not really funny. Maybe I should have gone with tuberculosis?

Friday fill-ins, take 1
So, I am thinking of doing this as a weekly thing...mostly because I am often so fried by Friday that it's all I can do to make the short drive home, much less post anything of note and/or coherence. You can hop on the train, too, if you like...join me, my friends!
1. The NCAA tournament is so exciting! Goooooo, Bruins!
2. Strawberry fields FOREVER. I'm not sure what else to put here. "...are located slightly to the south of me, mostly in Watsonville"?
3. A chocolate Guinness cupcake sounds like it would taste delicious!
4. Why does spending obscene amounts of money at Target and office supply stores make me feel so good?! (Probably has something to do with the new Franklin Covey planner I scored today at Office Max...on clearance!)
5. The Trevi fountain is something I've always wanted to see. ("Add it to the list," GP would say.)
6. It's sad when every fill-in for this sentence is actually sad, and not just emoticon-sad. Not gonna go there twice in one day.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to delicious pizza with GP, GPdad, and GPmom, tomorrow my plans include a trip to the spa for a facial with GPmom and Sunday, I want to eat some ham with GP, GPparents, and my family at The Apartment!

The cruelest month
To misquote T.S. Eliot, "March is the cruelest month." Sorry, T.S., but my cruelest month comes a little early every year.
Two years ago, it was when I found out that my sister was going to stop the treatment that she had been undergoing for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. I mustered the nerve to write about it here, and got some more catharsis here and here. Really, it was just the beginning of the gut-wrenching parade that March would become infamous for.
Last year, it was a call from an aunt to tell me that my father had been in the hospital for a week, due to a 10+ cm basal-cell skin cancer on his back (that he had known about for at least a year, and was in pathological denial about). My father had been in the hospital for a week, and hadn't seen fit to call me, to let me know anything about it. I sobbed during much of the phone call, and completely lost it when I hung up, and ultimately, I was mad. I was angry at him for thinking that I would be bothered with this news, instead of wanting to drive as fast as I could out to the Central Valley to be by his side during multiple surgeries, skin grafts, blood samples, and crummy hospital meals. When I finally called him later that evening, on the phone in his hospital room, I started the conversation by asking him if he'd seen any of the recent basketball games (my dad is more of a rabid Bruin fan than I am, even though he's not a UCLA alum). From there, I decided that a good, "What the hell?" was in order, and a healthy amount of crying into the phone, again. I am pleased to say that my dad (my stupid, stubborn, denial-ridden, clinically-depressed, light-of-my-freaking-life dad) is doing well now, is missing many, many cancerous and precancerous skin irregularities, and is, above all, still alive.
This year, to continue the streak, I get a call from my uncle. This is my dad's brother, the one who is gay and was an extra parent to me when I was a kid (and continues to be, even when I am less of a handful to babysit), who has had his partner for longer than I have been alive. He leaves me this message, saying that they had been in the south coast (Cambria, I later found out), and that Mark, his partner, is sick, and call back, "maybe tomorrow evening or something." The next day after work, I gave him a call back, and within the first thirty seconds, learn that Mark, my "uncle" and extra-extra parent, has lung cancer. This is no surprise, really, because both of them have been smoking for at least thirty-five years, but it never seems quite as real as it should be. How do you begin to absorb, "Mark has lung cancer. He coughed up a bit of blood, and he's had a chest x-ray, a CAT scan, and a biopsy. We don't know the results yet, but we do know that it's in his lymph nodes, around his trachea"? How do you pull yourself into the reality of, "I think what they'll do is start chemo, and then do a surgery," when all you want to do is crawl into that small, black box that's "safe" from these things that you knew damn well were coming, but still aren't ready for?
I, of course, have to be the one to tell my brother, just like I had to tell him about our dad. And I will have to tell my mom, who was close to them when my parents were together, who is only a couple months older than Mark. I will have to make a trip out to Stockton with Greg, who has only met them once, and I will have to get my brain around the fact that this is real, that this is happening, and that I have to be a grownup about it.
I'm sorry that this is such a stormcloud of a post-- I swear there are wonderful things happening in my world, too, but I need to get this out before I can talk about any great things that happen to be going on. I promise, y'all, that I'll be reporting back about delicious food and good spa times had by all, in the near future.

Monday is the new Saturday
Cold open: Eliot Spitzer, with his poor wife standing by his side. I can’t say anything about the situation that hasn’t already been said, so I will leave it at seriously, Eliot Spitzer? And, seriously, America? Are we surprised that a politician ended up being a hypocrite? Because certainly this cannot be the first time this has happened. “I am, at this point, incapable of embarrassment.” Probably not far off, or at least one can hope. The premise here is that he is going to become a private-practice lawyer who specializes in particularly “lurid, embarrassing sex scandals,” such as “gay bathhouse slip and fall,” “defective masturbation device,” “customs seizure of German porn,” “botched erotic asphyxiation,” “denial of reach-around,” or the worst-case scenario, the “dead hooker.” Nice open, and for the first time in the last four weeks, not a Barack and/or Hillary-related sketch.
Please, baby Jesus, don’t let Jonah Hill sing during his monologue… Look, I enjoyed Knocked Up (which I saw with a former boss, who was still my boss at the time…it was a fun and strange Friday night) and Super Bad, but not as much as I’m sure many others did, so I’m interested to see what Jonah Hill does within the confines of the show. I know that I express concern over the abilities of comedians to perform in this setting, but the truth is that I feel that many of the show’s best recent hosts have not been comedians. I do firmly believe that it’s a tougher milieu (and that I seem pretentious for using that word, but I assure you I’m doing so correctly) than film or regular television—there’s less time to prepare, less time to react, and you have to possess that sixth sense that allows you to refrain from cracking up or looking into the camera (I’m looking at you, Jimmy Fallon). Anyway. Jonah Hill looks a little stumpy in this getup…jeans, a black t-shirt, an open button-down, and…a suit jacket? Yeah, I don’t know, either. He is cute as he says that he’s so excited to be there, that it’s “literally the most amazing moment in [his] entire life,” which I’ll let slide because it seems genuine. He calls himself a fancy gentleman, and I feel a song coming on. As long as there is a top hat or cane involved, we might be all right. He does say the words “top hat,” but I don’t know how I feel about his “underpantsies.” There are four guys in tops and tails behind him, and the lyrics to the song are pretty hilarious. Well played, Jonah Hill.
MacGruber, a MacGyver takeoff that is hit-or-miss for me. I give this one an A-, mostly because of the wigs and the brevity.
Game show! What’s Your Situation, hosted by Lou Delhomme (JH). Apparently the show’s title comes from the follow-up question asked to every (female) contestant—“What’s your situation? Are you married, single, dating…?” The married contestant is sent packing, and the host is that creepy guy in the bar ordering you a Sex on the Beach when you really want a Jack and Ginger. I’m all for free alcohol, but seriously guys, let the ladies order. This sketch is pretty short, too, and I’m wondering if this will be indicative of the rest of the show—really quick pacing, but I sort of like it because it’s not belaboring any unfunny premises or jokes.
JH in glasses and a clenched fist that looks more ready to knock on a door rather than punch bring us back from commercial, to a Benihana! Which is really just an okay place to eat—the eye contact and shared seating are really off-putting for me, and the last time we went we were seated across from this couple that consisted of a douchebag on his cell phone talking about “cabbing it to San Fran” (ugh, kill me—never call it “San Fran,” or “Frisco,” for that matter) and his poor lady friend. Within Benihana we find a pair of guys and a pair of girls—JH is Bill Heder’s 6-year-old son, trying to get his dad some action and coming across like a sportscaster version of Woody Allen performing at a Catskills resort. Oop, is Jonah going to laugh in this one? Nah, he’s holding it together, and talking crazy loudly…much like an actual 6-year-old, with slightly better comic timing and many more nebbishy tendencies.
Aaand, another damned MacGruber. Boo.
OMG!!!1!!!!!@!@1 April 5th, Christopher Walken and Panic! At The Disco. Love, love, love! Does that mean two weeks off, though? Aw. Totally worth it, though.
Jonah and his so-classy-that-he-got-a-tattoo-of-it-on-his-finger mustache segue into The Suze Orman Show. Bear with me, folks, all I know of Suze Orman is that she is a former Oprah protégé (like Dr. Phil, and we know how well that’s going), and is sometimes on the Today show (from which, you will remember, I am taking a break). Rockin’ some animal prints and a sassy Midwestern accent, along with some weird vocal phrasing. The “Can I afford it?” segment begins, and I guess that we’re supposed to infer that she’s a lesbian…? Huh, ok. She tells a rich guy to go to Epcot rather than Europe, and…meh. Although I will certainly be trying to incorporate the phrase “full-tilt dumbass” into my daily lexicon, for sure.
SNL Digital Short! Andy Samberg is being measured for a ringmaster’s jacket when Jonah hill enters in a funny little hat (it’s not that funny, but he doesn’t have a “hat” head), inviting Andy Samberg to coffee. JH apparently met Andy’s family after the show “last week” (note to the observant: Andy’s dad is Jack Handey!), and has been seeing Andy’s dad since. They went to grab a beer, got to talking, and then made out, which is about as attractive as you think it might be. Andy is, understandably, “really not cool with this,” but Jonah believes it’s love. There is an implied fellatio at some point. Ben, the dad, enters and kisses cheeks and ruffles hair, and then Bill Hader enters, revealing that he and Andy’s dad have also been “f**king.” Thanks, Lorne Michaels…definitely the best digital short that’s been on in the last three weeks.
Mariah Carey. Bleep-bloop.
Weekend Update! Bwa-hah, the whistle blower was having his whistle blown! Nice. CA passed some new regulations for home schoolers, there are tons of drugs in water, and we get a Really!?! With Seth and Amy segment! Sweet. Probably at least as good as the Michael Vick one. Ugh, would Mitt Romney really run as McCain’s running mate? He seems so…sleazy. I know this seems incongruous, as he is a Mormon and all, but he seems so greasy and disingenuous. China was removed from a Department of State list of human rights abusers, giving me my very own Really!?! moment, and 1 in 4 teenage girls has an STD, which I will choose to blame on abstinence-only sex education and limited safe-sex resources for teenagers. Am I right? Maybe. I know that there are other factors, such as earlier and earlier sexualization of kids and shifts in how families communicate and operate as units, but ultimately someone has to be teaching these kids what to do, and having sex as a teenage doesn’t have to mean anything but a deep sense of regret and some stories about speeding away from one’s boyfriend’s house, clutching one’s bra…not that I know anyone who had to do that or anything. Tracy Morgan comes to talk about Barack Obama being “reminded” that he’s black by Geraldine Ferraro, saying that we are a racist country, which I can’t say I disagree with. It’s not overt, and it’s not everywhere, but it’s there and it’s complicated and Tracy Morgan is much more coherent here than I expected him to be. “Bitch may be the new black, but black is the new president, bitch.” Love it.
Yay! A Target-lady sketch! So, this is only sort of a recurring character for Kristen Wiig, but it’s so bizarre that I love it. Almost as much as I love Target. Target lady has a strange temporary amnesia thing that erases her math skills, and is excited when a customer reminds her that she’s at Target. Kenan Thompson comes by and asks if he can pay for his items, to which she replies, “I don’t know—can you?” If I were a teacher, I would be doing this sort of thing endlessly. This is why it’s probably best that I am going to be a librarian: fewer opportunities to inflict proper grammar on the children. A cardboard cutout of Isaac Mizrahi appears, but only fleetingly, and Will Forte comes by to exchange some sweatpants for 99 cent (!) Nilla Wafers—after KW suggests he take the ill-fitting pants to a tailor. Pure gold, I tell you!
Will Forte is Brian Williams—who played Brian Williams last week? I could have sworn it was someone else. Oh well. We learn that John McCain is old. We know this! Seriously, is he not close to the age Bob Dole was when he ran for president? And everyone was flipping out about Dole’s age! Why the exception here? Not that this is a disqualifier, the fact that he’s old, but I would like some equal treatment. If we want some disqualifiers, I’ll…not be getting into that here or now. Mmm, Megan no likey.
Unrelated, but I feel that it is my duty to share it with the interwebs: a commercial for Old Navy reminded me of my quite-successful trip there yesterday, where I bought, among other things, a new pair of jeans (that is a size smaller than I’ve been wearing recently and reveals no butt-cleavage!), a new bathing suit (a tankini that I didn’t try on until I was home, due to unfortunate lighting conditions in dressing rooms), and this fabulous “bathing suit cover-up” that I will instead be taking many naps in—or at least that’s what happened Sunday afternoon on my couch. At any rate, get thee to Old Navy! At the very least, you’re getting some crazy-cheap tank tops, and god knows every girl needs about forty-seven of those.
Jonah Hill in a bolo tie is an old-timey record producer pimping out country singers…and proceeds to laugh a bit as he discusses the songs. This is pretty bad. Spaceships, toddlers, Model T cars, and jars of beer? Was this a Mad Lib? Do. Not. Want.
Mariah Carey. You know the drill.
Jonah Hill and what’s-her-name are on a date after “talking online for so long,” and right away I am on guard. You must know that GP and I met through the torrid world of the Craigslist personals, he the new guy in town who could spell and punctuate properly, and I the local gal who knew the limits of her nonexistent social circle. Most online dating is ridiculous, but I like to think that it just makes us extra-lucky…also, in his posting, he did mention that if things went well, I had to be willing to lie about how we met. And yet, here I am. Not lying at all. Jonah Hill loves the smell of burnt meat, and had claimed that he was a personal trainer, proving that either this girl was quite the idiot or he was quite the smooth talker/typist. Oh, and he drives a PT Cruiser, which has inspired a new version of the “Slug bug” game between me and GP. Totally fun to play—you have to try it!
Overall? Well-played, Jonah Hill. Let’s have some beers sometime.
Deconstructed
So, remember that time that I bitched and moaned about all the construction that's going on around The Apartment? Well, some of it has begun...and this is what our walls look like:
Just behind where the front door is, facing into our living room, are two good-sized holes, as well as the drywall that was cut from several locations in the apartment, to allow access to pipes.

This is one of my favorites, because it displays the best of what the plumbers/contractors/whoeverthehells are doing here. One of the holes, the bigger one, is "securely" covered with plastic that is roughly one-eighth the thickness of plastic wrap, while its smaller sibling peeks out from behind the fridge, completely uncovered, a perfect entry point for whatever creatures might be living in our/any of our six neighbors in this buildings' walls to come in and claw out our eyes in our sleep, and then drink all our wine.

Guest bath hole #2--pretty unassuming, behind where our towels usually are. (They, however, will not be replaced until some unknown day when the construction people come back to patch and paint because, seriously, they tore shit up in my bathrooms. Not cool.)

And here, we have the Terrifying Open Hole of Danger, conveniently located right above our shower head. Good thing GP's parents, who land at SJC tonight, will be staying in a hotel.

This one is in our bathroom, right next to the toilet. This will be gross, so avert your eyes if you are delicate, but I have a terrible, irrational fear of something leaping through the plastic (thank god it's covered!) and strangling me or something while I'm on the toilet. This would probably be some cousin of the creature that pops through the hole in the kitchen.
At any rate, I am now off to watch (and prepare a recap of!) SNL, in a hole-free room of the apartment. Please direct all positive thoughts to the protection of me and GP from any malicious creatures that now have a couple new entry points into our apartment.

Entrenched, or A Story of My Saturday
It would seem that I am incapable of breaking my "an entire week behind the SNL episode that she's recapping" habit, yet I submit to you that it is not true! Sure, today is the Saturday following the last new airing of SNL (and tonight will be yet another live show-- Lorne Michaels, why do you do this to me?), but I am thinking that we're just going to power right through this, ok? Today is mostly devoted to watching college basketball, but I've got the DVR set up to capture my Bruins' eventual Pac-10 tournament win, and am ready to go on with the recapping! Oh, and I have to go to work today for about two hours, which is officially The Lame. Because this Conference-USA game is boooring (come on Tulsa, let's admit that you don't have a snowball's chance against Memphis and be done with it), I am headed to The Tivo Lair for some good old sketch comedy! (And probably the new episode of Whose Wedding is it Anyway?, but we will not be recapping that, mmkay?)
Ok, this week we have Amy Adams and Vampire weekend. Let the recapping begin! (I also just narrowly missed dropping the remote into my cup of tea, which is easier to do than you might thing, and would probably have led to the demise of my relationship. Phew.) Our cold open is Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton, approving an "unfair and deceptive message." Could it be a red phone parody? Probably. (And oh, P.S., that is a ridiculously fear-mongering ad, one that I would have thought HC was above. I have a hard time watching it all the way through without some sort of outburst. And I really like her!) Since I'm bad at being prompt with the relaying of weekly hilarity, I've seen most of this sketch on clip shows and whatnot-- pretty solid. Amy Poehler can do little to no wrong.
I must say before I watch the monologue, I have loved Amy Adams since Drop Dead Gorgeous, which I would watch just about every day on Starz! after school during my junior year of high school. Starz! likes to show the same movies, at the same time, for at least a month at a time. I now own that dvd, and can recite every line of dialogue, with varying degrees of success with a Minnesotan accent. Okay, so...cute dress, but I have a feeling that it's actually more interesting than it films. Kristen Wiig doesn't really look that similar to AA, so let's move on. Damn! We're back into the place where allll SNL monologues are sung. I do not like this place, but at least Amy Adams is a decent singer (did we not see her sing at the Oscars? Pretty cute.)
ABC Family, even "less offensive" than regular ABC. (Although let me please note that I am regularly offended by most facets of Seventh Heaven. Noted.) "Mirror Image," there are twins who pretend to be one person, apparently because they are horribly lazy. Sounds like a good plan to me...but a potentially lame sketch. Also, one of the twins is fat, which I guess is a wrench in their plans. The acting here is actually slightly better than on most ABC Family shows. Sorry, ABC Family! I still love your 25 days of Christmas!
Nest week: Jonah Hill and Janet Jackson. Nice. I look forward to recapping this within the next 24 hours! Really. Oh, and can someone tell me if it would be foolish to go see Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day? I do like me some Frances McDormand!
A vampy Amy Adams leads us into the next sketch, in which she is a therapist to Amy Poehler and Will Forte. Amy P. is pretty slouchy, and also more than a tad foreign. Would couples therapy be fun, or an endless tedium of "how do you feel about that?"s? Could it be any worse than watching this? We get it, Amy Poehler, you're good at this Bulgarian (?) accent. Very nice. Amy Adams, that's quite the necklace. And Will Forte, nice...merino sweater? Whatever.
SNL Digital Short! Rain falls, and someone pours a drink, which is unfair because, hello? It's not even 10am here! This is why the recaps should be closer to "live." Andy Samberg looks like something out of American Psycho, singing what sounds like it could be a Flight of the Conchords song. Andy Samberg is a superhero, in a pretty baggy suit, singing this song...and getting beaten up by a mugger. For fun, I counted the times that Jason Sudeikis punches him-- it's 54. Then he has a mailbox thrown at him, and is hit once with a 2x4 for effect.
Faux Bravo commercial, "the newest makeover show." This better be that Project Runway sketch that I've been hearing about and trying not to watch! Amy Poehler is an awesome Christian Siriano, saying "hot tranny mess" within the first thirty seconds. Awesome! I wish that Fierce: The Hot Mess Make-Over Show were real! The sifting through the "fashion victim's" clothes reminds me of a certain seen-by-everyone (right? Because it's pretty great) YouTube phenomenon. I wonder how hard that Christian wig was to make. Also, would it not be wonderful if the actual Christian (or Tim Gunn!) were to show up?
Vampire Weekend. They are pretty cute, and I enjoy their music. Thanks, SNL, for keeping me hip despite my sometimes-agoraphobic tendencies.
Weekend Update! I found out in the past week that Seth Myers is now the show's head writer, which is not surprising, but did make me feel a little pang of...pride? Because I really enjoy Seth Myers. Okay, moving on. We learn that Hillary Clinton is not a monster, GWB is accepting donations for a library (in his name? Let's not get me started), "Hey Hillary, How are you going to be Ready On Day One if it takes you thirty-one primaries to get warmed up?," Charlie Crist is a rumored McCain running-mate? If she doesn't know about it already, a certain friend of mine will be crazy mad about this-- she spent the year after her college graduation in Florida campaigning for one of Crist's opponents. Clearly, the opponent lost, and she is now in law school, forever hating Charlie Crist. Bwah ha! Senator Tim Calhoun. Always so strange, thanks, Will Forte. John McCain is old, German soldiers are fat, and there's a robot/water cannon that chases away drug dealers from a bar in Atlanta. Can I please go see this robot during my upcoming Trip To The South? Amy Poehler manages to say the words "elf defense" with a straight face when talking about a tiny gun, and pops open one of those champagne-confetti things. Well, played, Amy P. The rest? Unremarkable, and I'm guessing not the most exciting to read.
Fallen Ballerina Doll Amy Adams creepily segues us into a traffic school sketch. Anyone ever been to traffic school? It sounds remarkably terrible. Ooh, Penelope! Love. I also believe that Amy Adams could be a pretty convincing second grade teacher, if the situation demanded-- traffic school seems pretty similar to elementary school, if SNL is to be trusted.
Amy Adams' sideswept hair welcomes us to a medical sketch, or an ad for Dr. Uncle Jimmy's Smokehouse and Outpatient Surgical Facility on Route 13! Will Forte, as a modified, Buffalo-plaid-clad Col. Sanders, explains both his "medical" training and menu. Guess I won't be eating lunch anytime soon... And Amy Adams doesn't look nearly as emaciated or corpse-like as Ellen Pompeo! Ew. Grey's and I have been on a break since the whole George/Izzie "love" thing began, because I am not a fan of just-plain-terrible writing.
Dangerously-small-dress wearing AA fades to reveal Jason Sudeikis as Roger Clemens, who I am pretty sure can decapitate a man with his bare hands, maybe even only one of said hands. Roger welcomes us, with his massively veiny arms and a play called, "Guess What, Dingbats? Steroids ARE Good For Baseball." This play is much more coherent than anything I imagine that would come out of Clemens' 'roid-addled mind. And I? Happen to like stats geeks, thankyouverymuch.
Kenan Thompson is...Tookie Styles? I have no idea. It's no good. Bleep-bloop.
Vampire Weekend, I will not fast-forward through you. Love!
Celebrations-- the perfect venue for a Ladies Night, and Amy A. is sporting her good old Drop Dead Gorgeous hair, which I assure you is horrifying. They order Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio...and, is this even satire? Sometimes the lamer of the ladies are only into terrible, wimpy wines-- although, for the purposes of the sketch, could we not have included White Zinfandel or Arbor Mist? There's a dance routine to "Umbrella," which I still love to listen to, and is further proof that I am, in fact, pretty lame.
To conclude...I would like to have hair like Amy Adams. And why are there so many street-fighting/street-dancing movies? Who sees them? Are these the same people who went to see 10,000 BC? I don't think I want to know. Amy Adams' hair person, call me!

Happy Pi Day! ...and other things I promise to post later
Yes, I am enough of a dork to not only celebrate Pi Day today, but also to foist it upon my coworkers, forcing everyone to bring a pie (entrees, like quiche, chicken pot pie, and even pizza are acceptable) to share at lunch. In the true spirit of the day, one of my bosses ordered pi-symbol pins from some magical place in the intertubes, which we are all sporting with pride. Pictures of pins and pies will be posted...with much less alliteration, I hope...at some point later today.
Also, the SNL recap is coming! I figure that it's about at my usual level of Friday-night awesomeness, so get excited about that. I'm trying to get out of my one-week-behind recap schedule, so there might even be a recap of this upcoming one on...Sunday? Oh, and I found out who Vampire Weekend are, thanks to a recent Fresh Air episode. Thanks, Terry Gross!

Really?
...is that what I sound like? As someone who shamelessly sings loudly in the car (and maaaybe even along to a Spice Girls Greatest Hits CD that she bought on a whim at Victoria's Secret), and subjects many of her loved ones to endless talking and occasional made-up songs about any old thing, I must say that today I have been given pause. We are in the process of getting a new phone system at work, which will be nice because I have a feeling it will mean that my job will end up being less secretarial than it currently is/has been, but annoying in that it has not *instantly* worked and solved all the world's (or the office's) problems. Today I had to set up my voicemail and recorded name for the directory, and in order to verify everything, I had to listen to myself recite the Professional-Sounding Greeting and my name. And, can I say? I'm sorry! I had no idea that I sounded like that. I sound every bit like the California born-and-bred, former sorority girl that I am. And for that, I apologize. Having to listen to myself in any recorded form makes me cringe, hard.
Anyone else have this issue? Am I just crazy?

Because I am captivating...
...and love lists, you get this... This is what happens when I am left to my own devices with memes. Multiple posts in a day, much to everyone's chagrin.
Corona, Smirnoff or Bud light?
Corona, Smirnoff, and Bud Light, in that order. I could deal with Corona only, as Smirnoff isn't my preferred vodka (and I'm not 16, so the wine cooler is out), and I ma too old to be foolish enough to drink Bud Light. It's Bad Beer, people!
Buy, Borrow, or Lease:
Buy clothes and things you really need (or that appeal to you so much that they beg to be bought), borrow books from the library (because, hello? It's free! I love me some library books), and lease an apartment in the Bay Area, because I am not Rockefeller.
Ford, Chevy, or Dodge:
This will make me sound like a terrible person, but you must know-- I can't get behind American cars in any big way. This probably makes me a Communist or something, but when America makes a car that is of compelling enough quality, I will be interested. Until then, I will feel guilty about driving my gas-guzzling Jetta.
Email, Telephone, or Letter?
I love, but don't send (or receive!) enough (personal, not work) emails. Letters are up there, too, because stationery is generally adorable, but I swear if you call me I will probably not answer. I have grown to hate the phone, I don't know why.
California, New York, or Florida?
Ha. California. Everything they say about us is true, and that still makes us better than NY and FL-- though I do love to visit GP's family in NY.
Kisses on the Neck, Stomach, or Ears?
Mmm, neck. Because if you try to do anything near my ears, I will cut you. Seriously, it is not ok with me. Not even a little bit.
Morning, Afternoon, or Night?
Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon, Friday night. Man, I hate Thursday.
Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Halloween:
Christmas. Not loving turkey, and the candy only makes the neighbor kids more cracked-out.
Coke, Pepsi, or Sprite:
Diet Coke Plus! I love that I can feel like I'm being healthy while I drink soda. Also, I am stupidly excited to visit the World of Coke when we make our trip to the south next month.
Dogs, Cats, or Hamsters:
Dogs, although cats are a close second. I love dogs pretty much unconditionally, but it really depends on the cat in question.
Beach, Mountains, or Desert:
Beach it is, but I am fanatical about sand getting everywhere. People getting married on the beach seems so crazy-making to me.
Cookies, Cake, or Brownies:
Cupcakes! The cutest of the baked goods.
March, July, or October:
March! Hello, basketball...
Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner?
Lunch, even though I don't like to make meals compete for my affection.
Giver, Sharer, or Keeper:
Giver. My egotistical side would like you to know that gift-selecting/giving is one of my real-life superpowers.
Eyes, Nose, or Mouth:
Eyes
Friends that lie, Enemies that pretend to be your friend, or Alone:
...and this is how we know that this was originally composed by a high schooler. Alone, I suppose. Which is oddly indicative of much of my high school experience.
But there's more!
Hi, my name is: Megan
But you can call me: Megan (Please don't nickname me. Just don't.)
Never in my life have I: spent a night in a European country that isn't England. This will change, though, in June!
The one person who can drive me nuts is: whoa, whoa, whoa...one? Have we "met"? Am I not often crazy-irritable? I suppose the greatest embodiment of this characteristic that's actually in my life is my mom, and that's probably because we're really similar.
My high school is: luckily, a distant memory.
When I’m nervous: I talk really fast and plentifully. Got me in a ton of trouble when I was younger.
The last song I listened to was: Cal's fight song, which I will readily admit that UCLA stole (and improved).
If I were to get married right now it would be to: umm...GP? Or whatever white-slave owner is forcing me into marriage. It's not really in the cards at present, but that doesn't mean I'm not obsessing over thinking about it.
My hair is: straight. That's its only trick.
When I was 4: it was 1987. The Simpsons showed up on The Tracey Ullman Show. It was a pretty rad time.
Last Christmas: I didn't even have to get out of my pajamas. In a word, awesome.
I should be: fast-forwarding through these commercials so I can get to more basketball!
When I look down I see: only four pairs of shoes on the living room floor! Yeah, turns out I'm not very good at putting things away.
The happiest recent event was: thinking that today would be the last day of running the current study at work, and that we'd get to take a one-day break. Thanks a lot, No-Show Lady.
If I were a character on ‘Friends’: I've been (pretty accurately) described as 50% Monica, 40% Rachel, and 10% Phoebe.
By this time next year: I will be a for-realsies grad student!
My current gripe is: people not showing up for shit that they were soooo antsy to schedule. Seriously, she sent me an email with one of those URGENT!!!1! exclamation points (which, lady, you don't know my priorities, and if you did, you'd know you aren't one) demanding to be scheduled.
I have a hard time understanding: Mandarin. Or, for that matter, most languages that I "don't speak."
If I won an award, the first person I would tell would be: my Mom! Because I am a Nerd.
I want to buy: a tank of gas for less than $40. Or a bike.
Where do you plan to visit: well, we're going to Atlanta and then Charleston for a wedding in April...then NY and Paris in June! Yaaaaay.
If you spent the night at my house: you would have your pick of two foldout beds! Yes, The Apartment is a magical place.
The world could do without: Ann Coulter.
Most recent thing I’ve bought myself: groceries. True story.
Most recent thing someone else bought me: Mexican food!
My middle name is: Elise, which I'm pretty sure that my parents thought would be a good idea because of Family Ties. Better than One Day at a Time, I suppose.
In the morning I: usually wake up before my alarm, which is infuriating.
Last night I was: eating dinner after 9pm. Thanks, work.
There’s this guy I know who: takes out my garbage and lets me smell his face after he shaves. He's delicious.
If I was an animal I’d be a: housecat, doing things that could be photographed and hilariously captioned.
A better name for me would be: ...
Tomorrow I am: working all the livelong day and watching the Pac-10 tournament
Tonight I am: watching the Pac-10 tournament!
My birthday is: December 2. I expect birthday greetings now, y'all!

Oblong dough blobs invade apartment!
...and I eat them (or portions of them) for dinner. After having an obscene amount of delicious Mexican food for lunch (on The Boss, as a "thank you" for some previous projects, as I am currently in the perpetual hell of rescheduling and having to stalk Actual Adults Who Have Made Appointments But Don't Show Up for another project), I needed something simple, and preferably not enormous, for dinner. GP is doing thesis/project things, so there was no need to do anything exceptionally meaty (I could take or leave most of it, but do not have the will or willpower for vegetarianism), and I had some of that pizza-dough-in-an-exploding-biscuit-tube in the fridge. Do you know what I'm talking about? It comes in this paper-wrapped cylinder, and you unwrap and pop it open, then unfurl the dough and have your way with it. It's super-easy to work with, probably full of preservatives and unhealthy shit, but it's Wednesday, and it's all I can do not to have microwave popcorn for dinner. At any rate, since the cylinder had "33% more!" dough in it, I divided it in half, loaded them with fillings, and popped them into the oven for less than 15 minutes. What emerged was pretty amazing, given the amount of energy, resources, and time required.
Witness:
Not terribly attractive, I know, but pretty tasty. This one has sun-dried tomato and olive tomato sauce, mozzarella, and turkey pepperoni (which is shockingly much better for you than regular, and I'm willing to bet that there are fewer ingredients of the "lips and assholes" variety that are present in the beef/pork variety).
And its friend:
Which has pesto, feta, and sun-dried tomatoes in it, with some parmesan sprinkled over the top. Yes, I am aware that my photography/kitchen lighting is atrocious, but I had to share my delicious dinner creation with the internets. You're welcome... :-)
What was your best dinner creation ever?
Dear Today Show...

Dear Today Show,
To borrow a phrase from our friend Stephen Colbert, you are officially On Notice. From that baby that you claim knows how to read, to Laura Schlessinger talking about women driving their husbands to cheat, to asking Jim Cramer, a FINANCIAL expert, about his friendship with Elliot Spitzer, your segments this week have been even more grating than usual. It's bad enough that I have to watch Meredith Vieira forget that she's now on a more "legitimate" morning show than The View (please, let's not get me started on Elisabeth Hasselbeck), but now I have to watch this baby, who is really more "local news" material (I need to see some corroborating studies, please!), too? I love babies and all, and do think that infidelity is wrong, and can understand that we might want to know, in an inappropriate and slightly voyeuristic way, what Jim Cramer thinks of what his friend did, but I have a sense of decorum. Today Show, I love your dramatic opening music, and I love that my DVR allows me to start you a little late, so I can watch your longest (and most actual-news-related) segment before I leave for work in the morning. But if you continue in this manner, and if I have to look at Drew Peterson's ugly, young-wife-killing mug one (or a couple) more time(s), I'm going to be forced to listen to Morning Edition instead. Don't make me be more of a yuppie than I already am, mmkay?
Regards,
Megan

Lolcats Sunday! Also, I want my hour back.
First, this...

And also, as mentioned before, I want my hour back! I had to pick up GP at the SJ airport last night, which was less than a 30-minute round trip, but confused my body enough, nevermind the daylight savings business. I took a weird nap in the middle of the afternoon today, and will probably have at least a little trouble falling asleep tonight. Lame, but at least my roommate is back.
Off to mom and stepdad's for some of Giada's braciole! I'm pretty excited, even though I'm not the biggest fan of le red meat.

Carrots and Sticks (or, How I Managed to Do Work and Recap SNL Simultaneously)
Ok, so I'm officially a week behind on my big self-imposed project of recapping SNL for the benefit of the internets, but it's because I'm buried under a mountain of tests that we're running at work! There are three going on right now, one of which we just (finally!) wrapped up actively testing, which involved forty people. My task now (well, one of them) is to get all the business they wrote down and said into a nice, neat Excel file, so no one has to look through a huge stack of papers but me. So, in order to kill two birds with one stone (and one of the birds in this case is decidedly less of a pain in my ass), I have devised a Genius Plan: I will enter some data, and recap a little. Then I will go back to the stupid data, and when I have entered some more, I will allow myself to go back to recapping. Sounds easy enough, but we'll see. Masochist that I am, I have elected to begin entering data first-- at least I'll get to do it on my PC laptop here at home, rather than my work Mac, which does not like to work with Excel in any attractive way.
(Only 18 more to go! I will allow myself at least the cold open and monologue.)
Second week in a row of a "Decision '08" cold open? If you say so, show. Let's see how this goes. Will Forte, you are no Brian Williams (great impression, though). How awesome would it be if they got actual Brian Williams to do one of these sketches? I know he hosted recently, and my love for Brian really knows no bounds. I need to see him on weekends, too! Darrell Hammond as Tim Russert...who is sometimes quite the caricature of himself anyway. Yes, political debates, especially regarding healthcare, can be a bit...dry, to say the least. Which is a little sad, considering what a critical issue it is. "Sweet Georgia Brown," indeed, Fake Brian. I know that Hillary Clinton herself will be having a cameo sometime in this episode, so I think that she must have some sort of sense of humor, after being called not only aggressive, relentless, and demanding, but also annoying, pushy, grating, bossy, shrill, and unpleasant in the beginning of the show. Not sure I love Fred Armisen's Obama... My attention is being lost, even though I think really everyone is giving their best impersonation here-- just not the best writing. We get it! The media loves Obama! Hillary can be a bit grating at times! It's...not that funny. Ooh, Law and Order "bomp-bomp"! And Vincent D'Onofrio, who is in my least favorite series of the franchise, CI. "...not a joke." You're telling me.
Oh! There she is! I have to say, even though I voted for Obama, I still think Hillary Clinton is a pretty amazing woman. I saw her speak in DC when I was in college for a rally/event, and got more than a little misty because it was such a politically charged moment. Whether or not you disagree with her tactics or policies, you have to admit that it's pretty freakin' amazing that we have a legitimate woman in the race for a party's nomination for President (that's the reason I can't absolutely loathe Elizabeth Dole, so it does work both ways). The "I love your outfit" exchange reminds me of the "Janet Reno Dance Party" exchange between Will Ferrell and Janet Reno, with the, "I like your dress, Janet...I like your dress, too, Janet." (See? I have been watching this show forever!)Hillary's laugh, though? Really terrible. But at least she can...laugh about it?
Ellen Page. Adorable, loved her in Juno. I'm interested to see how she fares in sketch comedy, and wondering if she can break out of the "quippy and quirky" mold. She does it well, but I want something else. First impression-- this is shallow, but I like her hair! It's the first time I've seen it down in maybe forever. Very nice. Her mannerisms coupled with the leather jacket are a little Fonzie, though. Andy Samberg as Diablo Cody...not as inaccurate as you might think. That Diablo is one tall drink of water.
(Ok, back to work now...)
Back! I realize some of the effect of my back-and-forthing is lost by doing this all as one post, but liveblogging this would be even stupider. Get excited, though, because I only have 12 more to go! This is totally a big deal.
The Dakota Fanning Show! Please tell me this will involve EP dressed as a small child-- for some reason, the concept is hilarious to me. Also, when will Dakota Fanning be too old to be considered precocious? The shrug-and-arm-flail is pretty off-putting... And ooh, I want to see Persepolis. "Dakota Fanning" talks to real kids in Rockefeller Center about global political issues, David Lynch movies, John Updike, and Bonjour Tristesse. This is about as funny as is sounds, which is not very. YES! EP as Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana, who is sublimely annoying. There is much hyperventilatory conversation, and a mention of Aeolian wind harp solos, which I don't think would be possible, right? Don't they just sit there in the window, sounding at the wind's whim? Sorry about the alliteration. Also, about this sketch.
Saturday TV Funhouse brings us...The Obama Files. Cartoon Obama talks to Cartoon Jesse Jackson in a janitor's closet, where Cartoon Jesse produces 100 rhymes for "change." Cartoon Brian Williams is struck by a blow dart when Cartoon Al Sharpton comes to talk to Cartoon Obama, and Al recounts his misadventures in eastern Paraguay and is outfitted with a dog's shock collar. I die a little inside, because, you guys? This is pretty lame.
Ellen Page and Kristen Wiig are...secretaries? In a wood-paneled office. Fred Armisen steps into the foreground to tell us about The College For Excellence, which is sometimes where I think I should have gone, with all the big bucks and job satisfaction that my English degree is bringing me. The College for Excellence, by the way, is located above a Korean Savings Bank, so that's how you know it's good-- I bet that bank takes care of all the student loans for the CoE! I wish I knew high-class business terminology. Stupid UCLA. The high-class business terminology, also, consists of phrases like, "I sent that mass email, and I cc'd everybody." This sketch is pretty solid and reminds me some corporate jargon flashcards I saw and almost bought once Low-hanging fruit, anyone?
Next week (or tonight, whatever), we have Amy Adams! And Vampire Weekend, which is something I assume the kids are listening to nowadays. It is hilarious to hear Don Pardo say the name of the band, though...
Back to work! (...guys, I'm almost done! Yay! Take that, pile of papers!)
The Other Boleyn Girl parody sketch. Has anyone seen this movie? I do love me some English history! Anne Boleyn likes riding steeds, but I don't think she's talking about horses. Dirty! Her sister is a bit of a hussy, and is less skilled at the double entendre. Kristen Wiig shows up as the "Other-Other" (and unibrowed) Boleyn girl, and it gets a little silly--and that's when the fourth sister shows up, and the fifth (a veritable Nubian princess). This sketch is lame, and, fortunately, pretty brief.
SNL Digital Short! Yay! Previous shorts include Lazy Sunday, Dick in a Box, and Laser Cats, so I expect something pretty great. Then again, I couldn't stand "Dear Sister." Sorry. Ellen Page awakens with a start, and wanders into her bathroom to take some aspirin. She's startled by...Andy Samberg as a developmentally delayed mime? In her bathroom mirror. He pops up a couple times in quick succession, holding a tropical drink with an umbrella in it, licking a lollipop, and doing some quick reps with what look like 5-pound weights. In that last pop-up, he looked a little like "Let's Get Physical"-era Olivia Newton John. Was it all a dream? Ellen sits up in bed, again, goes into the bathroom, and the not-mime is on the toilet, reading the paper. Come on, SNL, what are you? Mad TV? The not-mime, in the next scene, awakens with a start, takes some aspirin, and is startled by EP. They then wake up with a start next to each other, and touch fingers in an ET sort of way. Dracula and his wife/girlfriend are there, as is a werewolf. Everyone's very startled, and this sketch is no Dick in a Box. But at least it's not Dear Sister.
Wilco plays, and I like them and all, but you know what happens to musical guests on TiVo. Bleep-bloop!
Weekend Update! Love. We're "not" going to be in a recession, beef has been recalled, Obama isn't really a Muslim, and McCain made a poor choice of opening speakers. Virgin Atlantic did the first biofueled flight, which seems cool, and Rudy Giuliani shows up! Remember when he wanted to be president? That was a strange time. Let's not pretend that he ever had a snowball's chance of getting that nomination. Bugs are a good source of protein, western states are 500% dustier than they were 200 years ago, and Mike Bloomberg is trying to establish oyster beds in NYC waterways... Naps are important! But 6 minutes? Child's play. Fred Armisen is Nicholas Fehn, political comedian-- one who manages not to be very funny at all, like many political comedians. This makes me yearn for Cinders Calhoun, in the Lilith Fair era...some special guests are more special than others, you know.
TiVo says there are about 30 minutes left, so I think that means I have to finish my work and then come back...I have high hopes for that last 30 minutes, however foolish that might be.
Ahh! I just finished with my big stack of papers! But I also realized that there's a basketball game that I have to get through on the TiVo before I leave to watch yet more basketball with my dad. Sorry, SNL. We'll catch up tomorrow, probably.
*There will be linkage added for a little color and interest, but honestly...basketball! Sorry, internets, you lose.
(Only 18 more to go! I will allow myself at least the cold open and monologue.)

Allow me to present...
...your three-times-in-a-row Pac-10 regular season champs, and all-around wonderful boys, the UCLA Bruins men's basketball team! And yes, Kevin, I can learn to live with your nasty facial hair if you'll promise to stay until you win me a national championship. Do we have a deal? It was a bright spot in my day that consisted of continuing to freak out over apartment construction, work/recruiting difficulties, and the reality of two whole nights spent GP-free (I know, I'm a whiner), and it had me exclaiming and writhing on my couch. Thank god for DVR, because seriously? I would not have been able to watch that thing in real-time.
Now, as I have a Friday night free, and will be working roughly twelve hours before it, are there any suggestions for fun activities? I've been thinking gin and tonics with a side of Project Runway and Lost...and probably some lolcats, too.
P.S. I promise I'll be a little less of a raincloud in a week or so. Things are just a little sucky right now.

That really cuts my cake...
...and not even in a good way. So, our apartment complex was recently purchased by a new management company, which I think is based in LA (at least that's what it said when I Googled it). Right there, I feel, is Strike One, because how the eff are they supposed to manage anything from hundreds of miles away. I suppose that's not the point, and it's not like they'd be walking around the units, inspecting the landscaping and making sure that nothing was floating around in the fountain, even if they were based here in San Jose, but still. LA is not close, people.
There have been issues with the apartment and management before-- there have been too many "we need to shut off the water today between 10ish and 6ish" notices to count, not to mention general pain-in-the-ass cable and internet setups (basically, there is an internet monopoly for people who don't want a landline in their apartment, as the internet would have to have some sort of...line, and the only alternative to crap-ass, no-Food-Network-having cable is DirecTV, which entails a huge pole/tower/tripod thing on our deck, not to mention a godawful DVR-- but that's a tangent we just don't have time for...). But, by and large, the most egregious things have happened since the new management company has taken over. Don't get me wrong, GP and I are happy to be in the location we are (mostly), happy that we're not paying a too-crazy (for the Bay Area) amount of rent, and happy that we have all the necessities, like shelter, food, and enough wine to last for a couple weeks, at least, even if it were to be the only thing we ever drank. The offenses I am about to describe to you are offenses of intense inconvenience than they are of actual damage or harm. Right now, and in the next few weeks, there will be three concurrent construction projects going on throughout the complex-- and this is after they replaced all the doors and windows in the midst of a few stormy weeks in late January (genius thinking, by the way...).
Three projects. At the same time. Now, as a college graduate, I feel that I may have an advantage over these clearly middle-school-educated property management companies in that I know a thing or two about time management, even if I don't always practice it. (Warning: I am about to be very petty, complainy, and all-around unpleasant. Consider yourself warned.) Since when is it a good idea to run three enormous construction projects at the same time? Since never, is the normal-people answer. You want to re-roof all twenty-odd buildings in the complex? Knock yourself out. That in itself is quite the undertaking, and I realize that you have a Serious Company set up to do it, not some guy in his pickup truck with his sixteen year old son helping him out after school. I get it, but why not pace yourselves? Might be nice to have to deal with only one potential clusterfuck at a time.
Oh, no? You want to replace all the balconies, too? Oh, that'd be nice, especially since we had to have some of the boards out there replaced immediately after moving in because they were rotted through and we could see through them. I get it, you want to be all structurally sound in earthquake country, that's cool. Oh, and bringing in our small table, chairs, plants, and grill? Not a problem, they might be able to live in our kitchen or whatever. But we have to get the eyesore of a DirecTV tripod off the balcony, too? Hmm, let me think: no. No freaking way am I going to bring that thing into my apartment, and neither is GP. (Sidenote: I'm going to have this conversation, this one about the eyesore-tripod de- and re-installation with Management tomorrow, as I seriously have no intention of paying to have it re-installed, nor do I plan to take that thing down by myself.) I'm interested to see what sort of solution you have, because my suggestion is that you be the ones to contact the cable company to have them take it down and put it back up. You wait for that four-hour window in the middle of a workday for that grubby guy to show up, and you pay him for the privilege of his company.
Oh, and the third thing? Is probably the worst yet. We got a three-page, Very Serious Document taped to our door (the typical delivery method for Very Serious Documents, no?) on Monday, saying that all the units are going to be re-piped. Apparently, this is a process that involves not only plumbers, but drywall and painting teams, too, and there's always the wait for the city inspectors somewhere in the middle there. During the process, we are to have everything off the counters in the kitchen and bathrooms and everything out from under the sinks, which leads me to an interesting question, a Zen koan of sorts-- where is all that stuff supposed to go? See, we're in a two-bedroom apartment, and storage is not at a maximum around here (witness the shoes that meander over all available floor space). I can't wait until this process begins, and the note taped to the door gives us some more firm dates, but you see, I can't read it in its entirety. Why? Because it is to remain on the door, like some sort of Passover marker, although I doubt that this one will serve to protect us very successfully. How, exactly, am I to review the pages that are posted on my door, if they are supposed to stay in that very place? Also, you guys put the wrong floorplan in the packet. Idiots.
You may be able to gauge the level of frustration...and I'm not sure what exactly (if anything) there is that I can do about it. A law-school-attending best friend of mine told me recently that she regretted that she didn't have any advice, as they haven't gotten to landlord-tenant relations in her Property class just yet, so I ask you, Internets: is there anything I can do besides complain into your vast tubes? Sure, it's therapeutic, and I'm sure at least someone likes to read my bitching, but I'd hate to think that it ended there. What would you do, in my position?

This week in numbers
Which is not to say that I will be reporting on the state of numbers. I'll assume that the numbers, the digits 0-9, are all doing fine and dandy, as they are not working 10+ hour days and feverishly wondering why a job that is so seemingly menial should also seem so difficult. Rather, allow me to present...
5: things on my "swing by Safeway on the way home, just a quick trip" grocery list.
13: things I actually bought at Safeway. I still got to go through the express lane, though!
6, no-- 11, no! 10: people that were recruited for one of the studies that is currently being run at my office. Returning emails is SO HARD, isn't it? What's that? It isn't? Then seriously, what the hell.
7: minutes late that our client company people arrived for the scheduled appointment start time this evening. Coincidentally, that is the same number of minutes it takes me to decide that I hate them forever. Professional adults? Who're they?
3: weeks until MaGP and PaGP come to town, and GP and I get to eat like kings (cross out) civilized grownups. Which we are, I swear.
58 (or so): degrees Fahrenheit in my office for the last two days, due to an imbalance caused by a projector in one (also soundproofed ) room in the office.
18: meatballs that I made for dinner last night. For two people, even two people who really like meatballs, I think we can agree that this is far too many.
30: people that we have to put through testing sessions before these three godawful studies that are eating up my life are done. Good job maintaining focus through that sentence, if you made it to the end!
Forgive the tardiness of the SNL recap-- we decided to watch two episodes of Lost that were languishing in the TiVo instead. Maybe tonight? Maybe.

Ok, so...
I haven't watched SNL yet, so there is no recap to post at present. I promise, though, that it will be soon(ish)! I have to get through the UCLA/Arizona basketball game, then make a trip to Michael's, TArget, et al. Apparently I do have money to spend.
So, to recap: please still be my friend! I'm just having a touch time getting started with anything today...
