The Way-Back Machine

Do you want to know a poorly-kept secret? I have been blogging for nearly seven years. Yes, sometimes sporadically, sometimes multiple times per day, all because I believe the world needs to hear what I have to say. Or, you know, read what I write. Whatever. This post is a part of 20SB’s Looking Back Blog Carnival, and Ben & Jerry’s is awarding free ice cream to lucky bloggers and readers! "Looking Back," according to the 20Something Bloggers, means that you are to "flip out your blog and pick a post from your first 2 months in blog-land that shows your mentality and outlook from the onset of your blog." Because I have had four (yes, count them, four) blogs, including this one, through the course of my blogging life, I feel compelled to chart my sometimes-humiliating "growth" as a blogger. And so, in the name of community participation, I give you a look back...don't say I didn't warn you. (And hey, seriously, you might need some ice cream or a good, stiff drink when you're done. Thanks in advance, B&J!)

The olde-timey-est of them all was Someday We'll Know, started in the fall of my freshman year of college. It began auspiciously, with a one-sentence post:
"If Britney Spears and Fat Bastard were to have a kid, I'd like to think that this child would resemble Anna Nicole Smith."
It quickly became about much else, but mostly is a pretty good representation of who I was when I was 19 years old. It is mildly terrifying to think that that was nearly seven years ago.

Next came the Xanga, around the time that I realized not having any readers or commentors sort of sucked. Also around the time that I began to date the first Big Love of college (who, spoiler, completely destroyed me about sixteen months later). There was quite a bit of "squee!" as well as a good deal of our friend passive aggression. Witness:
"Ok, so I got to work until 1 today, but it's not as horrible as it sounds. I would have been up this late anyway, and Patrick came to walk me back, just so I wouldn't be violated as I trekked back to the dorms along Gayley. Good times, and I got to take some sandwiches back with me (yay for free food!)...oh, and I think I got titled tonight. It was kind of something that was understood, I think, but it's always nice to have clarification. And now, to climb up onto Cloud 9 (hehe, Erika...) and go to blissful, blissful sleep..."
and...
"
Did you ever feel like, when certain people pop online and don't IM you, and you don't want to IM them because you're not sure if you'll get verbally decapitated, it feels like a staring contest? Think about it... Oh, and of course I have an individual (or two) in mind, but I'm much too passive-aggressive to name names."

Somewhere in the middle of the Xanga run began Tragic Maturity, a blog name that came out of an inside joke, and that I sort of regret not currently having (or at least posting on...it still exists, so whatever). Maybe I'll go back. Who knows. TM started around the beginning of Big(-ish) Love #2 of college, the fall of my junior year. This was the second year I was living in my sorority house, so here is a fun glimpse of how I felt about Greek life and technology (aw, remember when Facebook was just for .edu people?). Oh, and fyi-- it's pronounced PREEE-sents, and not like the ones under the Christmas tree.

"
Presents and other debauchery

Last night was Presents, which is generally kind of debutante-sounding, even though the cutesy little part at the house during the day is followed by the most insane date party of the year. It's like this every year-- all the girls put on their black or white dresses (yeah, we're cult-y, but every house does it...so I guess that makes it ok) and pack onto too few school buses, get to the venue, and proceed to dry-hump their dates. Of course this year was no exception-- there were only two buses, so we had to triple up (or, in the case of my seat, quadruple. Not, fun, especially given that my and Mike's seatmates were making out and groping each other already.) The place was really cute, and a good deal of quasi-espionage had to be done to ensure that we got back into the Coolest Couch/Chair Thing Ever (ha, like putting your jacket on a seat will keep other, possibly intoxicated people from sitting there? Idiot.) Two Red Bull and vodkas and a gin and tonic later, I was just about ready to be home (not even necessarily mine, just someone's so that I didn't have to watch other people make out)...the "early" bus left a little after midnight, and I was on it.

Woke up before my "alarm" at 11 (ha, I got more than three hours of sleep last night!) and had semi-breakfast made for me (yes, I'm counting a bagel as breakfast. He made me an omelette the other day, so there.) Watched some thing about killer whales and seals and penguins on the National Geographic channel, felt old. I feel a little guilty about making him go out last night when he has a midterm today, but am really glad that we got to go-- I'll make it up somehow, I promise.

Technology is so fucked up. Last night I heard one of the girls talking with her date about how she's going to change her "relationship status" on her FaceBook profile to "in a relationship with ___" now because they're official-- as if the FaceBook profile is the thing that makes their relationship valid or legitimate. Even things like blogs (hello, Xanga, I believe you've become a little passive-aggressive, yet I'll still continue to update because I'm so OCD) have become this whole other dimension of relationships, making shit that was already confusing even more so. No one can be completely honest in a blog about a relationship, especially when the interest might be reading. How do you get around the "Ohh, I like him so much!" when that's a big part of what's going on at the moment? Ok, off to the land of truth-- the paper journal, which no one is allowed to read, although several have made attempts. Argh."

Which brings us to the Tea and Cake Time. Ready to create (or reflect, rather) my new post-college persona, I started semi-lamely, with a meme. Things quickly picked up, as I revealed myself to be quite the reflection of Stuff White People Like, encompassing at least NPR and Being Offended:

"
Why I listen to NPR

Not just because I'm a bleeding-heart, West Coast-living, registered Democrat with a crush on Ira Glass...but also because on local radio, especially in the morning, one's ears are treated to scintillating segments (sorry for the alliteration, it flares up when I'm annoyed) such as, "Is It Gay?" Debate is then held over whether things like having personalized checks or being a male cheerleader is gay. Not that these people are social scientists, but I'm going to have to point out here that correlation is not causation. Thank god for Morning Edition!"

Win/lose

Win: My mood has been fantastic recently, probably because I've been working out regularly. Weird, right? Thanks, endorphins!

Lose: I am convinced that I have some sort of specific social anxiety that rears its head only in my Issues in Academic Libraries class. It might be the combination of "I have no idea what I'm talking about," a professor who is formidable and intimidating, and a few classmates who really, really like to talk. This week will be our third meeting, and I am determined to say something other than "here."

Win: I tried on dresses for the first time with my mom a couple weekends ago, and it turns out I am not a plus-size bride. (They don't vanity-size wedding dresses, folks!) The two dresses that I liked the best were this one and this one (sans flower).

Lose: The dress trying-on expedition for this past weekend was thwarted by a dental emergency that my mom had. Also, I have few local friends who are readily available for such tasks...so I stayed home and watched America's Best Dance Crew at the gym. Not a total wash.

Win: I found a DJ who is also a pianist! And is not crazy-expensive! That means that I may only have to pay and feed one vendor for a couple services. Yay!

Lose: I have realized I would much rather be planning my wedding than doing schoolwork of any kind. This had led to massive amounts of procrastination and stress. Turns out grad school is just allowing me to continue the habits I developed as an undergrad...but if it wasn't constantly rewarded with good grades, I'd stop! Seriously. Life is hard.

Win:
My weekend ended really well-- first, I attended Wedding University with my best friend/MoH, then met up with another friend for some PF Chang's. Wedding University is much more fun than graduate school, but I don't know that it will improve my job prospects.

Lose: I have a terrible assignment that is due tonight by 11:59. I have no idea how to go about starting it. Whoops.

As promised

Los fill-ins del viernes!

1. I'd really like to have both the will and physical strength to complete the first level of the 30 Day Shred without wanting to die right now.

2. "Whyyyyyy???" is the word you'd most often hear me say if I stubbed my toe. I like to be as dramatic as possible, as often as possible.

3. Possession is a pretty great book, but only an okay movie. Hello, it's about English scholars! Totally a dream come true. Also, Aaron Eckhart. Delicious.

4. I'd like to have a drink with Captain Jack Sparrow. After that, I am not responsible for what happens.

5. Marshmallows and fire go together like...peanut butter and jelly? Man, now I totally want a roasted marshmallow. And some sort of fire. Can one roast a marshmallow over a candle?

6. If you get me talking about cooking, I could go on and on. I feel like I know just enough to be knowledgeable, but am still insecure enough about my skills not to be a jerk about it. Don't worry, though, I manage to be a jerk about other things.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to having a couple days off to hang out with the friends and loved ones. Tomorrow my plans include a cake tasting at our wedding place with GP, trying on dresses with my mom (is this a terrible idea, following cake tasting with dress-trying-on?), and Sunday, I want to be satisfied with a normal portion of chili and (light!) beer at our Super Bowl/Puppy Bowl party!

Interviewed by RA

Since the Disney fun is over, the plan now is to just go back to talking about myself all the time-- so get excited! Something that's been hanging around my inbox for awhile now is an interview that I asked RA to do for/with me. Here goes nothin'...

Why did you start blogging?
This is something that I definitely have to think about, because I began blogging during my freshman year of college-- a whole seven years ago, which seems like forever. I suppose I began blogging mostly as a journaling outlet for myself. I had no readers that I knew of, and just really enjoyed the idea that I was preserving those early college memories, however humiliating. I transitioned into Xanga, where there was more of a sense of community, and found that I (mostly) liked having an audience. However, I began to find Xanga kind of ridiculous (is it weird to say that it seems like the MySpace of the blogging world?), and switched back to my dear old Blogger. My reasons for blogging have definitely changed, as has my content, and I have to say that I really do enjoy blogging as a means of connecting with people that I wouldn't otherwise know.

If I were to come to visit for a day, what would we do?
Because I want to pack as much into this Day of Fun as possible, we'd start out early with breakfast at my favorite local place (because I love to gorge myself on coffee cake, especially before 10 a.m.). Then we would struggle to find a parking place at a nearby shopping area, but it would be worth it because there is a colossal Borders, a Container Store, and even an ATL there-- where we would exclaim over the deals that we would find, and convince each other to make too-large purchases. Exhausted from all the shopping, we would make our way to my favorite sushi place and eat rolls that are larger than any sushi has a right to be. All this, of course, is a precursor to the inevitable food- and shopping coma, to be recovered from while watching a zillion dvr-ed episodes of Jon and Kate Plus 8. Dinner (and wine, of course) would be prepared at The Apartment, with recipes coming out of my shamefully-not-very-organized recipe binder.

What item of clothing makes you feel great when you wear it? Why?
My favorite item of clothing is one that I don't get to wear very often, but still love to bits. It's this $50 (um, now $12.50!!! Go buy this dress, please!) black dress from Target that I got a couple Decembers ago for a company Monte Carlo Night, and embodies a lot of things that I love about a good dress: it's revealing in a surprising way (via a very cool "envelope" back), it's lined in an interesting color (red), and it has pockets! It's fancy without looking like I'm going to a cotillion, and super-versatile.

If you could hire a personal servant, who would you choose?
I would like to hire someone who is a mix of my mom, Oprah, and Martha Stewart (not that all three ladies don't already have a lot in common). I want someone who cares about me, who could give me a good pep talk, and could also give me a good kick in the ass. A gym buddy, someone to organize things, and someone to do all that grownup-type stuff that I just can't be bothered to do (recycling stacks and stacks of old magazines? Yeah, she could do that).

Which occupation would you try for a week?
If it were only for a week...I would love to be a kindergarten teacher. I so enjoy being around kids, but I don't think that I have the patience to be any kind of teacher for more than seven days. But, for that one week, I would be all about getting everyone to sit "criss-cross applesauce" and to share and be nice to others-- then a real teacher would have to come and take over before I somehow irreparably damaged all the children.

This was so fun! Thanks, RA. If any of my eight (my high estimate) readers hasn't been interviewed yet and would like to be, just leave me a comment asking me to do so.

The Grand Finale: Epcot!

Now it's time to say goodbye...to all our Disney World memories. D-i-s...n-e-y...W-o-r-l-d! Sorry, I had to do it, what with the letter amounts being the same and all. Also, if you don't know the Mickey Mouse Club theme song, you need to take some "Keepin' It Real" classes. (I am on glass number three of merlot for the evening, so shut it)

Epcot was my absolute favorite park of the vacation. It's divided into basically two different sections-- Future World and World Showcase, and each is just about what it sounds like. The important things to remember are these two: Future World is home of The Ball (the iconic ball, which houses the Spaceship Earth ride) and cool rides like Mission: Space and Soarin' (which is called Soarin' Over California at California Adventure, and is the exact same ride in Florida), and World Showcase is home to various and sundry international pavilions, which exhibits and rides from countries like Mexico, Norway, Canada, and Morocco. I apologize in advance for this completely photo-heavy entry, but I am in love with these oh-so-ridiculous pictures.

Let's begin with Future World, shall we? We took dozens of pictures of Spaceship Earth, and this one is probably my favorite:

Front and center, from the entry plaza. It's pretty imposing, right? Next, a look at the Nemo and Friends ride. It's different from the one at Disneyland in that you're seated in a clam-mobile rather than in a submarine, and the characters are projected into the Living Seas exhibit-- personally, I prefer the Disneyland version of the ride, but I absolutely love the Living Seas... Luckily, I don't have to choose. Yay for getting to visit both! Here I am with my undersea friends:

Unlike the dozens of children (and their parents, ahem) that viewed the landscaping as their personal playground, I managed not to climb up into the bushes. The best part of the ride-- and I know this sounds weird-- is the end, because it spits you out into a fun marine-life exhibit, with dolphins, manatees, and tons of fish and such. For instance, the clownfish:

Another feature of Future World is Innoventions, which is much cooler in Epcot than it is at Disneyland (where it is a weird wasteland full of Playstations). If you understand the Friends joke that we are trying to capture here, I will be your friend forever:

All right, now to the fun part: World Showcase! For the sake of my own memory, I'm going to take these in order. The first country that we happen upon is Mexico, our festive neighbor to the south. In advance, I apologize for any unintended racism-- I promise that I love all people, and their alcohol and crazy hats that go along with their much-cooler-than-my-own culture. And now...margaritas!

Viva! Now, let me tell you my awesome plan for World Showcase, devised over the first of many margaritas: take as many pictures as possible in the hats of each country's pavilion. The "drinking around the world" part of Epcot was a given (and we did, albeit over the course of several days), but I wanted to make it extra awesome. Hence, headwear. The one that started it all:

When I showed that to my mom, she asked just how many margaritas I had had. The answer? Only one. GP was being infuriating, and I was impatient about having my picture taken. Two more features of the Mexico pavilion were brightly painted ceramic skulls (with which I felt the need to enact a Hamlet scene) and ball-in-a-cup, GP's favorite olde tyme game.

Somewhat incongruously (World Showcase does not present these countries in any sort of order, and the drinking just makes it more silly), Norway is next to Mexico. I enjoyed a Carlsberg and some well-placed antlers...

After a spin on the troll-filled (seriously) Maelstrom, a Viking boat ride followed by a Norway video, we happened upon a plethora of horned hats. Mischief ensued.

It's true, I will cut you. next comes China, where there is plum wine and another hat, as well as a very cool "Circlevision 360" movie about china (pictures, clearly, of the beverage and hat).

Next up was Germany, where there was not a hat (well, there might have been, but it was dinner time), but there were bratwursts, pretzels, and Becks! The picture is crazy-dark, sorry friends.

In Italy, I enjoyed a glass of prosecco and a blown-glass apple, Desperate Housewives-style. Apparently, the Italians are not hat people.

In the center of World Showcase is the "host country," America! Along with a very cool animatronic show called The American Adventure (which we got to see the backstage area of, while on our tour!), I enjoyed a Budweiser seasonal brew (shockingly good), and a couple patriotic hats.

This headwear obviously makes me proud to be an American. I mean, come on, y'all. Clearly we have the best hats. Right next to America is Japan, where GP and I shared a Kirin and I attempted some Japanese glee. Thoughts?

One of our lunches was had in the next pavilion-- Morocco! Some tasty shwarma, Moroccan wine, and a fez for dessert.

Our fanciest dinner was had in the France pavilion, where we dined at the Bistro de Paris. Need I remind you that we are the kind of people that get engaged in Paris? I know, I feel like I jerk whenever I bring it up. Speaking of jerks, how did I do with my arrogant-face in the beret picture?

Now, I may be a francophile, but in the name of keeping it real, I have to confess that I was an anglophile first. Which may be why I felt right at home drinking a Strongbow cider in the pub-- alas, no hats! Way to miss an opportunity, United Kingdom. (Bobbies and beefeaters both have great headwear, don't they?)

Rounding out the World Showcase, along with another Circlevision 360 film (narrated by Martin Short), is Canada! Witness the Labatt's imbibing and final humiliating-hat-wearing...

Well...that's it! I promise that the blog will now be going through a detox from all these pictures of me drinking and wearing crazy hats. I will not likely stop talking about myself (what is this, a blog or something?), and do have an "interview" by RA that's been sitting in my inbox for awhile now...

Friday fill-ins are baaaack

Now I only have to put actual effort into entertaining y'all six times a week. I'm tearing myself away from a dvr-ed NBC Nightly News to present to you...Friday Fill-ins! Get in on the action!

1. My blueprint for success includes finishing library school in a reasonable amount of time and finding a job that is both fulfilling and better-paying than my last full-time job. (I'd like to think that I have more earning power post-master's degree, right?) Besides that, I am excited for my now-less-than-a-year-away wedding and all that will follow it!
2. A mini Crunch bar was the last candy I ate. Damn you, Halloween!
3. The best facial moisturizer I've ever used is this Pond's one that I found on a recent Rite-Aid jaunt. The packaging is mostly in Spanish, which is fine for my bilingual self, and a little internets-research told me that there is some awesome "science" behind this overwhelmingly baby-powder-smelling lotion! (Not my favorite frangrance, btw, but I'm willing to deal.
4. Cooking can be good therapy.
5. I'd like to tell you about all the competing color schemes that I have floating around in my head for the wedding. But I won't, because even I am bored by wedding stuff, most of the time.
6. My willingness (nay, compulsion!) to be truthful with everyone (sometimes much to my detriment) is my strongest characteristic.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to watching this weeks episodes of The Office, 30 Rock, and Grey's, tomorrow my plans include a presentation/class meeting in the morning, work in the afternoon, and a wine/cheese party in the evening, and Sunday, I want to visit another potential wedding place with my mom. So begins the process...

It Girl

I have been tagged by Tipp for the "Six Truths/Facts/Quirks About Me" thing, so here goes nothin'...

The rules:
Rules are:
* Link to the person that tagged you.
* Post the rules on your blog.
* Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.
* Tag six random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs.
* Let each random person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their website.

1. I am more likely to cry when I am angry than when I am sad. Sad? I get pretty quiet, shut down, don't want to be around anyone. But, angry? Begin the waterworks-- I think it's the frustration element of being so mad, yet so unable to express it in any way that I can wrap my brain around. You know, except for a good old Angry Blog Entry.

2. I am a horrible, terrible person when it comes to the exercise portion of the "healthy living" thing. I want to do it, I know I should do it, and I feel guilty that I only do it about once or twice a month. The size of my ass isn't enough to convince me to hop on a treadmill, apparently. I am hoping that I can find some motivation or way to distract myself from the Pure and Complete Torture of Working Out before I am that lady who has to be lifted out of her apartment with a crane so that she can appear on Maury. Please halp.

3. I couldn't bring myself to drink more than a sip of beer before my junior year of college. It completely disgusted me. Since then, however, beer and I have become friends, and I love the thought of a Blue Moon with an orange wedge on a summer Saturday, or a Sierra Nevada at a baseball game. Hell, even the seasonal Sam Adams is generally acceptable. Yes, I am a slight beer snob...but that's ok with me.

4. This is pretty obvious to anyone who has ever spent more than twelve seconds with me, or probably read anything that I've written, but oh well-- I am really, really judgmental and critical, sometimes to the point of slight cruelty. While I feel guilty about this at times, I mostly wish that people understood that I have the power to turn that same judgment and criticism back in on myself. So, as much as I might be over-judge-y with others, trust me, I am the same way with myself. So...shut up.

5. I hate speaking on the phone. I don't think it's because I am overly self-conscious about the way my voice/"accent" (yes, I am from California...it's not exaggerated, but I am told that I "sound like I am from California"), but rather because part of my first out-of-college job required calling people and trying to sell them/their children "memberships" at my tutoring center. Granted, they had provided the contact information, but I still felt like such a sleaze. I much prefer email, IM, texting...carrier pigeons, smoke signals. Seriously. I hate the phone. Even for doing things that I know I need to do, like dinner reservations or hair appointments. I can't explain it.

6. This is a poorly-kept secret: I love, love, love Disneyland. If you haven't, you need to read GP's Disneyland trip report (because we are nerds, and he seriously wrote this epic theme park narrative instead of doing work yesterday) to understand the depth of this love. I prefer the California park because I am a California supremacist, and because I love the immediacy of all of the park's attractions and its ability to completely envelop you in the experience of being there. As someone intensely interested in storytelling, I love the continuity of the "story" of the park-- everything is intentionally arranged, scented, flavored, and presented, just for you (and thousands of your Goofy-hat-wearing brethren).

All right. I am hereby tagging...
Michelle, of Michelle and the City
Renee, authoress of A Beautiful Day in the Reneeborhood
Confessions of a Jersey Girl's Rachel Elizabeth
Nicole of More is Better
Emily, over at Sea Legs
EP of Stylish Handwriting, who I cannot stop tagging and awarding things to

It wouldn't be Friday without...

...Friday Fill-Ins! Here you go, internets.

1. I love springtime in Northern California! The trees blossom in huge clouds of pink and white, I get to wear flip-flops with alarming frequency, and can sleep with the windows open. Ambient street and neighbor noise is something that I am willing to tolerate if I get to have the occasional breeze.

2. Toast with peanut butter and plain Greek yogurt are foods I love to eat for breakfast. If it's the weekend, I will have some eggs with Tabasco (which GP absolutely hates-- he won't let me sit near him when I eat them), some waffles, or, if I am feeling saucy, I will go out for eggs benedict. I'm convinced they wouldn't be as tasty if I made them myself, but I'm sure I will someday.

3. It seems I'm always searching for my new favorite restaurant. The standbys that GP and I end up eating in, at least once a month each, include the aforementioned sushi place and a really great Italian-style pizza place. We always end up taking people who are visiting us to either of those places, and also this great barbecue place, and a sometimes-a-tad-too-greasy-but-always-delicious burger place.

4. Clearing all one's work emails is a great way to end the (work) day. Do you know what I mean? Just doing one final scan, making sure that there are no loose ends. That is what allows me to enjoy an evening or a weekend-- no little rough edges clouding my brain. Oh, and in case you were wondering, a glass of wine and an episode of Family Guy are a great end to the (after-work) day. Peter Griffin and pinot, Meg and merlot, Chris and a cab...now I am annoyed at my alliterative self. You get the idea, though.

5. I think I may be well on my way to proving my worth as an employee! (Yippee!)

6. Warmth and sunshine is what I've been craving lately. Fortunately, nature has decided to give in to my demands, and I can spend a good chunk of the weekend laying by our pool-- covered in sunscreen, of course, and reading something wonderful. Any suggestions? I might get started with the second in the His Dark Materials series (I finished The Golden Compass awhile ago, and really liked it).

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to whatever our dinner decision ends up being, tomorrow my plans include the aforementioned poolside lounging, and Sunday, I want to be finished with all this work spreadsheeting that I've brought upon myself! If Excel is the way to worm my way into the heart of my boss, so be it.

What are you doing this weekend, internets?

Really?

...is that what I sound like? As someone who shamelessly sings loudly in the car (and maaaybe even along to a Spice Girls Greatest Hits CD that she bought on a whim at Victoria's Secret), and subjects many of her loved ones to endless talking and occasional made-up songs about any old thing, I must say that today I have been given pause. We are in the process of getting a new phone system at work, which will be nice because I have a feeling it will mean that my job will end up being less secretarial than it currently is/has been, but annoying in that it has not *instantly* worked and solved all the world's (or the office's) problems. Today I had to set up my voicemail and recorded name for the directory, and in order to verify everything, I had to listen to myself recite the Professional-Sounding Greeting and my name. And, can I say? I'm sorry! I had no idea that I sounded like that. I sound every bit like the California born-and-bred, former sorority girl that I am. And for that, I apologize. Having to listen to myself in any recorded form makes me cringe, hard.

Anyone else have this issue? Am I just crazy?

Because I am captivating...

...and love lists, you get this... This is what happens when I am left to my own devices with memes. Multiple posts in a day, much to everyone's chagrin.

Corona, Smirnoff or Bud light?
Corona, Smirnoff, and Bud Light, in that order. I could deal with Corona only, as Smirnoff isn't my preferred vodka (and I'm not 16, so the wine cooler is out), and I ma too old to be foolish enough to drink Bud Light. It's Bad Beer, people!
Buy, Borrow, or Lease:
Buy clothes and things you really need (or that appeal to you so much that they beg to be bought), borrow books from the library (because, hello? It's free! I love me some library books), and lease an apartment in the Bay Area, because I am not Rockefeller.
Ford, Chevy, or Dodge:
This will make me sound like a terrible person, but you must know-- I can't get behind American cars in any big way. This probably makes me a Communist or something, but when America makes a car that is of compelling enough quality, I will be interested. Until then, I will feel guilty about driving my gas-guzzling Jetta.
Email, Telephone, or Letter?
I love, but don't send (or receive!) enough (personal, not work) emails. Letters are up there, too, because stationery is generally adorable, but I swear if you call me I will probably not answer. I have grown to hate the phone, I don't know why.
California, New York, or Florida?
Ha. California. Everything they say about us is true, and that still makes us better than NY and FL-- though I do love to visit GP's family in NY.
Kisses on the Neck, Stomach, or Ears?
Mmm, neck. Because if you try to do anything near my ears, I will cut you. Seriously, it is not ok with me. Not even a little bit.
Morning, Afternoon, or Night?
Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon, Friday night. Man, I hate Thursday.
Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Halloween:
Christmas. Not loving turkey, and the candy only makes the neighbor kids more cracked-out.
Coke, Pepsi, or Sprite:
Diet Coke Plus! I love that I can feel like I'm being healthy while I drink soda. Also, I am stupidly excited to visit the World of Coke when we make our trip to the south next month.
Dogs, Cats, or Hamsters:
Dogs, although cats are a close second. I love dogs pretty much unconditionally, but it really depends on the cat in question.
Beach, Mountains, or Desert:
Beach it is, but I am fanatical about sand getting everywhere. People getting married on the beach seems so crazy-making to me.
Cookies, Cake, or Brownies:
Cupcakes! The cutest of the baked goods.
March, July, or October:
March! Hello, basketball...
Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner?
Lunch, even though I don't like to make meals compete for my affection.
Giver, Sharer, or Keeper:
Giver. My egotistical side would like you to know that gift-selecting/giving is one of my real-life superpowers.
Eyes, Nose, or Mouth:
Eyes
Friends that lie, Enemies that pretend to be your friend, or Alone:
...and this is how we know that this was originally composed by a high schooler. Alone, I suppose. Which is oddly indicative of much of my high school experience.

But there's more!

Hi, my name is: Megan
But you can call me: Megan (Please don't nickname me. Just don't.)
Never in my life have I: spent a night in a European country that isn't England. This will change, though, in June!
The one person who can drive me nuts is: whoa, whoa, whoa...one? Have we "met"? Am I not often crazy-irritable? I suppose the greatest embodiment of this characteristic that's actually in my life is my mom, and that's probably because we're really similar.
My high school is: luckily, a distant memory.
When I’m nervous: I talk really fast and plentifully. Got me in a ton of trouble when I was younger.
The last song I listened to was: Cal's fight song, which I will readily admit that UCLA stole (and improved).
If I were to get married right now it would be to: umm...GP? Or whatever white-slave owner is forcing me into marriage. It's not really in the cards at present, but that doesn't mean I'm not obsessing over thinking about it.
My hair is: straight. That's its only trick.
When I was 4: it was 1987. The Simpsons showed up on The Tracey Ullman Show. It was a pretty rad time.
Last Christmas: I didn't even have to get out of my pajamas. In a word, awesome.
I should be: fast-forwarding through these commercials so I can get to more basketball!
When I look down I see: only four pairs of shoes on the living room floor! Yeah, turns out I'm not very good at putting things away.
The happiest recent event was: thinking that today would be the last day of running the current study at work, and that we'd get to take a one-day break. Thanks a lot, No-Show Lady.
If I were a character on ‘Friends’: I've been (pretty accurately) described as 50% Monica, 40% Rachel, and 10% Phoebe.
By this time next year: I will be a for-realsies grad student!
My current gripe is: people not showing up for shit that they were soooo antsy to schedule. Seriously, she sent me an email with one of those URGENT!!!1! exclamation points (which, lady, you don't know my priorities, and if you did, you'd know you aren't one) demanding to be scheduled.
I have a hard time understanding: Mandarin. Or, for that matter, most languages that I "don't speak."
If I won an award, the first person I would tell would be: my Mom! Because I am a Nerd.
I want to buy: a tank of gas for less than $40. Or a bike.
Where do you plan to visit: well, we're going to Atlanta and then Charleston for a wedding in April...then NY and Paris in June! Yaaaaay.
If you spent the night at my house: you would have your pick of two foldout beds! Yes, The Apartment is a magical place.
The world could do without: Ann Coulter.
Most recent thing I’ve bought myself: groceries. True story.
Most recent thing someone else bought me: Mexican food!
My middle name is: Elise, which I'm pretty sure that my parents thought would be a good idea because of Family Ties. Better than One Day at a Time, I suppose.
In the morning I: usually wake up before my alarm, which is infuriating.
Last night I was: eating dinner after 9pm. Thanks, work.
There’s this guy I know who: takes out my garbage and lets me smell his face after he shaves. He's delicious.
If I was an animal I’d be a: housecat, doing things that could be photographed and hilariously captioned.
A better name for me would be: ...
Tomorrow I am: working all the livelong day and watching the Pac-10 tournament
Tonight I am: watching the Pac-10 tournament!
My birthday is: December 2. I expect birthday greetings now, y'all!

Sorry, it's Tuesday

...so all you get are some lists, and that's really only courtesy of Dan and Stylish Handwriting. Without further ado, I give you...

My Top 10 Memory(-Provoking) Songs
- WARNING: My actual musical tastes are better than this list might suggest, but the songs are still evocative. So shut up about it, already.
10. "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio," Shakira. I bet you didn't know that I was pretty fluent in Spanish. (Wait, did I include that in the 100 Things? Oh well...) Well, turns out I am, and this is the song that I would sing to myself in a small Spanish voice after I sneaked out of my parents' house and drove to my older "boyfriend's" house during my senior year of high school. It was a time of poorly-thought decisions, but I still really enjoy the song, mostly because it lets me be bilingual and sing really loudly in the car.
9. "El Tango de Roxanne," Ewan McGregor. Again, Spanish, although it's sung in English, by a Scotsman. It was on an unfortunate mix-CD that I made in high school for the future Young Republican, even more unfortunately titled "The We-Mix." Sorry, everyone.
8. "Answering Machine," Matt Nathanson. I'm not sorry that this one will always be in my Top 10 List-- it was my first Big College Music Discovery, and he's still one of my favorites. That, and you're guaranteed at least one Journey cover at each of his concerts!
7. "Let's Get Loud," Jennifer Lopez. Hear me out. It's not so much about the song as it is the circumstances-- junior year of college, and my friends and I were dead tired and a little punchy from days and days of "conversation workshops," because some sorority girls don't know how not to ask inappropriate questions. The group Fate's Baby (yeah, genius name, I know) was born (sorry!), and its debut dance was choreographed to this tune, complete with moves such as The Sprinkler, The Indian, and The Fish Out of Water.
6. "Hey Driver," Lucky Boy's Confusion. Road trips. Singalongs. Enough said.
5. "You Shook Me All Night Long," AC/DC. Look, I was in a sorority in college. And we all know that gin and tonics + fraternity boyfriend + AC/DC = embarrassing photographs. Good thing the evidence has been destroyed, or otherwise lost track of. (Sorry about the dangling participle!)
4. "Second That Emotion," Smokey Robinson. I was at the birthday party of someone I didn't know, with a boy with whom I was completely infatuated. The song came on, and I knew enough to hum along... Love the song, not so much the boy.
3. "Lover, You Should Have Come Over," Jeff Buckley. Only when I was twenty-one would I have been content to share a twin bed and a single set of iPod headphones with someone night after night. Now, I insist on my own headphones and half of no less than a double bed (though we have a queen, and getting a king in a hotel is paradise).
2. "Chocolate," Snow Patrol. The first song that I thought of as "mine and GP's." I'm not sure what the current one is, and I can't see us dancing to Snow Patrol at our wedding, but at the time, it was a song that reminded me of him every time I heard it.
1. "Can't Help Falling in Love With You," Elvis. In the early days of Me and GP, I "cleverly" alluded to this song in a blog post title. Because I am so crafty, and it worked! I managed to worm my way into his heart. Also, I am really cheesy.

Because I love to make lists, you get this one, too...

Top Five Movies (we'll just say that this is "of all time," not necessarily evocative of anything even though there are distinct memories attached to each), not listed in order of my affections...
5. "Drop Dead Gorgeous," at times awesomely bad, and consistently laugh-like-a-crazy-person funny. If you haven't, you should check it out-- even the usually-annoying Kirsten Dunst manages to make it work.
4. "Love, Actually," which I saw in the theater, twice. I cried, within the first five minutes, each time and nearly every time thereafter. Despite wanting to slap Keira Knightley every time I see her, I adore this movie. Also, I am unabashedly a "girl" about this movie, as I am about very few others.
3. "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," which is a Serious Christmas Tradition in my family. The day after Thanksgiving is the typical first viewing, and we usually watch it at least three times between then and Christmas. It's a large part of the basis for the secret twin language that my brother and I speak.
2. "High Fidelity," which I think is one of the best "based on the novel" films that I've seen. True to Nick Hornby's hilarious book, and contains several lists, which appeals to my list-loving (self-evident, no?) personality. One cannot go wrong with John Cusack, and this made was before Jack Black became a caricature of Every Role Jack Black Has Ever Played.
1. tie - "Spellbound" and "Wordplay," because I am nerdy enough to love documentaries and completely willing to "own" it. Because I love words as well as competition and puzzles, these two are bound to be on any Top Random Number List of Movies I Love.

Honorable Mentions: The Queen, Good Night and Good Luck, Waiting for Guffman, Before Sunrise, Shakespeare in Love, Muriel's Wedding, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

What movies and songs do you love? Are there songs or books that are evocative of certain moments in your life? Can you even wait until I make my Favorite Books list?

100 things

Nearly every blog that I've discovered and immediately loved recently has had this feature, and, what can I say, I love to feel like I belong. I'm pretty sure that this will take me at least a week to get through, but I'm willing to suffer through it-- all for the sake of my six (an optimistic number) readers!

1. When asked, I will tell you that I grew up in the SF Bay Area. This, to me, is mostly true, despite the fact that my first ten years were spent in the Central Valley. Formative years, however, including the ever-popular Surly Teenage Years, were spent in the good old Silicon Valley.

2. I can't honestly say that I am either a Dog Person or a Cat Person, because I'm both. I am, however, not a fish, rodent, reptile, or amphibian person. I just don't see the appeal. Dogs are cute. Cats are cute. Other animals, on a domestic level, are completely unappealing.

3. I find it hard to reconcile my disdain for much of celebrity culture and my adoration of gossip. Rarely do people like you or I grocery shop with such fanfare! I don't know that that makes me envious or grateful to be "average." See? Conflicted!

4. If I could be anything when I grow up (and money, skills, location, and education weren't factors), I would be a pastry chef, a magazine editor, an architect, or an event planner. I will probably end up being a librarian (because that's what my Master's will be centered around...), and that's ok with me, too.

5. When I was a child, I would make elaborate "blueprints" of my future home(s). I wish that I could find them, because I'm sure they were pretty great.

6. The second I started college, I began to get along better with my parents. Surly Teenage Years, indeed.

7. Although I didn't give it much thought at the time, I am really glad that I went to a Division 1 university. Besides all that education business, I also finally learned to understand football (at the Rose Bowl, no less!), and to call the basketball players by their first names (something that I still manage to do, even though I don't get to attend 2 games a week like I used to).

8. If you sit next to me while I'm watching a basketball game, you will think that I am a crazy person. You would not be wrong, as it's probably not healthy to be as interested in college basketball as I am.

9. I only applied to colleges in California. Along with out-of-state tuition, I always figured that I'd go to grad school outside the state in which I grew up. Turns out I was wrong about that...

10. All my life, I have attended public schools, from kindergarten through when I complete my yet-to-be-started Master's degree. However, I am conflicted about where I want my (hypothetical) children to go to school, given the state of California public education.

11. I love to paint my own fingernails. And, if I may say so, I do a fairly good job at it-- I have very solid fine motor skills! However, I loathe painting my toenails. Totally worth the money to have someone else do it.

12. I have few qualms about most DIY beauty procedures. This alarms many, probably my mother most of all.

13. I adore board games, but can rarely find people willing to play with me. This may have something to do with the fact that I tend to be uber-competitive.

14. I hate to play Monopoly. I am always the one who "ruins" the game by wanting to quit after half an hour.

15. Speaking of competitive, the biggest competition in which I was ever involved was a state spelling bee. Had I not been nine years old at the time, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have stumbled during "hypocrisy" (no self-correction allowed? What the hell.)

16. I can't have a favorite color. I can't make myself pick just one, not being past the age of fourteen. But, if clothing is any indication, I am partial to black...and whatever sort of blue my Jeans of the Day happen to be.

17. I played the violin for seven years, from fifth grade up until junior year of high school. Senior year and a new director got the best of me, but I can still read music like nobody's business.

18. My senior year of high school, I participated in my school's annual Improv Night. I must confess that I cheated at the "go to the other room offstage, then come back onstage and guess what the other people are pretending to be" game. How was I supposed to guess that she was an amorous unicorn?

19. I was raised to be a Democrat. Both of my parents are in unions, and I once made up a song (during an election year, when politics were the only thing on the tv at any given time) about how one should vote Democratic because they invented democracy. What? Dukakis was Greek. Poor guy.

20. I am envious of people that have distinct cultural heritage. My largest "fraction" is British, so I embrace that by drinking tea, being obsessed with manners, and generally acting disdainful.

21. Sometimes I can't remember what I did before DVR. And then I remember...Food and Style Networks, alllll the time. So, pretty much a less controlled version of what I watch now.

22. My brother and I speak a secret twin language that consists of terrible movie and old SNL quotes, despite the fact that we are not, in fact, twins.

23. My brother is about 6'4", my mom is 5'10", and my dad is 6' tall. I, however, am (at most) 5'6". On a Tall Day.

24. All of the kids in my family are perfectly spaced, with three years between each. I, being the eldest, generally get to be The Boss, and that's ok with me.

25. I was in a sorority in college, something that no one, least of all me, saw coming.

26. I have numerous t-shirts to prove the above. I am, however, reluctant to wear most of them in public.

27. I haven't had a landline phone for six years. Whaaaat? It's like I'm from the future!

28. I can't bring myself to get rid of my 310 area code. It's the thing that I'm least willing to get rid of from my college years.

29. I like puns more than I am generally willing to admit, and enjoy constructing/finding them where/whenever I can, much to the chagrin of my friends and loved ones.

30. I never used to cry in front of anyone, ever. Now, I cry at pet food commercials. What the hell, Pedigree?

31. Grammar and spelling are a big deal to me, probably inordinately so. Really, though, is it so hard not to end a sentence with "at"?

32. Out of all the punctuation marks, I'd have to say my favorite one is the comma. No pretense, like the semicolon, and not as abrupt as the period. Simply a graceful swoop, allowing the rambly writer to create unwieldy periodic sentences.

33. One of the reasons GP and I are together is because he was able to distinguish himself with both spelling and grammar.

34. If one were to check, at any given moment, there are at least six lip-related products in my purse. I don't wear lipstick or anything regularly, but boy do I love to buy it!

35. If time, money, and work schedules were no object, I could easily spend nine months out of every year traveling.

36. I insist on being home for Christmas. Even though I'm not particularly religious or even traditional, the thought of waking up in a bed that isn't mine on Christmas morning makes my skin crawl.

37. My favorite quote in the world is this: "We want to be rich, to be admired, to eat like a horse and be skinny as a snake, to have small children ask for our autographs, to be on terrific medications that make us calm and witty and sexy, to be able to give George Bush a piece of our minds, to sing Irving Berlin and Gershwin and Porter at the Oak Room and be described in the Times as "luminous," but in the absence of all that, it's enough to be loved." -Garrison Keillor

38. I am good at opening champagne. I am very good at drinking champagne.

39. Words with "-aic" suffixes seem elegant to me, for some reason. Archaic, algebraic...these words seem, to me, like the linguistic equivalent of champagne flutes. I didn't say it made sense.

40. Punctuality is a big deal for me, even though I am late sometimes/often.

41. One of my high school math teachers used to include "always/sometimes/never" sections on his tests. I like to think that there are many life situations in which I can apply these same rules-- for instance, "Always have Splenda on hand," "Sometimes restock the purse supply at Starbucks," "Never take more than a fistful-- that's going too far."

42. It is impossible for me to enjoy drinking cool/cold liquid from a mug. That sort of vessel/content dissonance does not sit well with me.

43. I can't drive a stick shift.

44. I'm not sure that I want to learn how to do so.

45. I have been basically continuously employed since the age of 16. My longest stretch of unemployment was about 4 months in college, during which I strangely missed waking up at 4:30 to go to work.

46. During my senior year of college, I lived across the street from an enormous cemetery. Walking to my 5:00am shift was often more than a little creepy.

47. One of my greatest skills is appearing to be "on." It came in handy when I worked in retail and during sorority recruitment, and when I was finally complimented on it, I was a little ashamed.

48. My first international trip was to England with my uncles when I was 12. It was then that I learned to "properly" wield a fork and knife and deal with public transportation, and I was in seventh heaven for the entire two weeks.

49. I wish that I had been able to go abroad during college. Instead, I chose not to live for a third year in my sorority house. I can't say that I feel I made the wrong choice.

50. I am really good with names, sometimes in a way that creeps me out. Shouldn't I be using my brain for more valuable things?

51. My first job out of college required the above skill. No joke, I had to take a test on all the names of the kids and the parents. I rocked the hell out of that thing.

52. My first job out of college helped me decide that I can never be a teacher. It also helped me decide that there are a lot of people that have kids, but really shouldn't.

53. I will remember some of those kids and parents for the rest of my life.

54. I am most flattered when people call me "articulate."

55. Even though it's mostly because I use words that have no place in everyday conversation.

56. When I am a grownup, I will own a beagle named Samuel. He will be named after Coleridge, but will probably not be addicted to opium.

57. I giggle every time I read the word "pantisocracy." I wish I had more opportunities to use it.

58. I like to cook. I love to bake.

59. GP likes most of what I bake. He loves most of what I cook.

60. I am generally nervous about swimming in the ocean, mostly because of all the creatures.

61. I love to go to aquariums. They do nothing to help me with my "swimming in the ocean" fear.

62. Living within less than an hour's driving distance to the ocean makes me feel calm. Not because I love laying in the sun, or even because of the sound. It's just nice to know that I'm so close to something that is so much bigger than I am.

63. It makes me nervous to even think of living in a state that does not have any ocean touching it.

64. I enjoy making awkward situations more awkward by commenting on the awkwardness. Sometimes, it's a good strategy to defuse some of the tension. Other times, not so much.

65. Because of my Dad, I have the ability to talk to just about anyone. I am not yet old enough to be That Lady That Talks to You in the Grocery Store just yet, though.

66. My real-life superpower is that I can read really quickly. It was hell on my parents when I was a kid, before I was financially independent or could take myself to the library. Now, I am beginning to realize the value of keeping only the books I really love.

67. Among those books that I really love is The Norton Anthology of English Literature. I call it the NAEL.

68. Seriously. I will pass those volumes on to my grandchildren, marginalia and all.

69. One of my favorite poems is called Marginalia.

70. I am semi-fluent in Spanish, and can sometimes fake my way through reading or listening to French.

71. I wish that I had had the opportunity to take Latin in school.

72. I can speak both Mac and PC, but currently own a PC because I am a brokeass. Pretty costs money, you know...

73. I suffer from near-instantaneous road rage. It begins nearly the second I get behind the wheel. Wait, scratch that. It's not so much a rage as it is a constant stream of sarcastic commentary about my fellow drivers.

74. "Oh yeah, do that. Do exactly that. Why would I want you to signal. No no, I like to be surprised by your big, idiot pickup truck turn, you moron!"

75. It's a very attractive trait.

76. I would rather skydive than bungee jump.

77. I like to think that I have above-average map-reading skills and sense of direction.

78. I love surprises, but am too big of a self-surprise-ruiner to ever be truly surprised.

79. Congratulations if you understood the above sentence.

80. My lucky/favorite number is 22. I suppose I could have mentioned this earlier.

81. I often dream of losing one or both shoes. I'm sure that has some sort of "meaning," but I'm satisfied thinking that it means that I value my shoes overabundantly.

82. My birthday is December 2. I was a month early. GP likes to say that it was the last time that I was ever early for anything. I like to tell him to shut it.

83. I love nearly all seasonal candy. Candy canes, Cadbury eggs, candy corn, even Peeps, which I will acknowledge are generally disgusting.

84. My most humiliating school moment was when I got a D on a paper I wrote for my History of Jazz class in college, about Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit." I was appalled, mostly because the TA who graded it was a barely-literate banjo player. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

85. I refuse to abbreviate my speech in text or instant messages. You will read everything I have to say, in its entirety! And there will be no "ur"-ing. Maybe a "wtf," but that's because I'm trying to slow down on the cursing.

86. I am rarely without a hair elastic around one of my wrists.

87. I used to be scared of elevators. This might have had to do with the time that I got my hand caught in one. Not allfears are unfounded and/or irrational.

88. I feel like kind of a jackass writing things like "and/or."

89. I feel like more of a jackass when I say things like "and/or."

90. I cannot stand words that are intentionally misspelled. It's not cute, friends.

91. I own three pairs of pink, high-heeled shoes. Each one kills my feet more than the last.

92. I once thought it would be a good idea to break in a pair of Frye boots on a trip to New York City. Turns out it wasn't, and I ended up hobbling around in (fake) Uggs for the rest of my trip.

93. One of my favorite books as a kid was From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler. I loved the idea of living in a museum.

94. The first book that made me cry was Bridge to Terabithia. The book that made me cry most recently was A Thousan Splendid Suns.

95. I take inordinate pleasure in building Ikea furniture.

96. I have never gotten a speeding ticket or a parking ticket.

97. Socks are rarely any match for the level of foot-freezing I manage to muster.

98. I become alliterative when I am tired, frustrated, or punchy from writing too much.

99. When I was in college, I went to DC with my Dad to participate in a pro-choice march. It was truly one of the most awe-inspiring things in which I've ever taken part, and it makes me extra-proud to say I did it with my Dad, who is probably a bigger feminist than I am. Also, because we hate babies.

100. I'm a little bummed that the list is over. I retain the right to come in here and edit the hell out of this.

Blog ADD

So, friends, this is officially the fourth blog that I have had in only 24 years on earth. Considering that only about 6 of them have been active blogging years, I'd say that qualifies me as one who just might have a slight case of the blog ADD. At any rate, I've decided to start of 2008 with yet another one...and some memes, how original!

*I know these aren't very "reach for the stars," but they're also fairly not likely to happen in my life, so there.

1. Start working out when you get to college-- you're not going to look like this forever!
